چکیده

The intuition of chance and probability develops at very early ages.1 However, a formal, precise definition of the probability is elusive. If the experiment can be repeated potentially infinitely many times, then the probability of an event can be defined through relative frequencies. For instance, if we rolled a die repeatedly, we could construct a frequency distribution table showing how many times each face came up. These frequencies (ni) can be expressed as proportions or relative frequencies by dividing them by the total number of tosses n : fi = ni/n. If we saw six dots showing on 107 out of 600 tosses, that face’s proportion or relative frequency is f6 = 107/600 = 0.178 As more tosses are made, we “expect” the proportion of sixes to stabilize around 16 .

ON THE STATIONARY PROBABILITY DENSITY FUNCTION OF BILINEAR TIME SERIES MODELS: A NUMERICAL APPROACH

In this paper, we show that the Chapman-Kolmogorov formula could be used as a recursive formula for computing the m-step-ahead conditional density of a Markov bilinear model. The stationary marginal probability density function of the model may be approximated by the m-step-ahead conditional density for sufficiently large m.

Comparison of frequentist and Bayesian inference . Class 20 , 18 . 05 , Spring 2014 Jeremy Orloff and Jonathan Bloom

1 Learning Goals 1. Be able to explain the difference between the p-value and a posterior probability to a doctor. 2 Introduction We have now learned about two schools of statistical inference: Bayesian and frequentist. Both approaches allow one to evaluate evidence about competing hypotheses. In these notes we will review and compare the two approaches, starting from Bayes formula. 3 Bayes for...

Computer Verification in Cryptography

In this paper we explore the application of a formal proof system to verification problems in cryptography. Cryptographic properties concerning correctness or security of some cryptographic algorithms are of great interest. Beside some basic lemmata, we explore an implementation of a complex function that is used in cryptography. More precisely, we describe formal properties of this implementat...

Conditioning using conditional expectations: the Borel-Kolmogorov Paradox

The Borel-Kolmogorov Paradox is typically taken to highlight a tension between our intuition that certain conditional probabilities with respect to probability zero conditioning events are well defined and the mathematical definition of conditional probability by Bayes’ formula, which looses its meaning when the conditioning event has probability zero. We argue in this paper that the theory of ...

Measure Preserving Transformations

This gives us a new probability measure on (Ω,F), so we may define expectations with respect to this conditioned probability measure. Thus for F measurable Y : Ω → R we define the conditional expectation E[Y | X = x] by taking the expectation of Y with respect to the measure (1.1). Consider now how to generalize the idea of conditional probability to the case when P (X = x) = 0. We wish to do t...
